America after the Civil War:
Video Conference Content
FORMAT:
Series
of 10 – 15 minute interactive videoconference segments that are
delivered on separate days. Content also available as a
traditional 45-50 minute videoconference.
The Constitution Tested
Students will examine the John Rogers sculpture,
Council of War
(1866) and interact with museum educator in a
question and answer session relating to the curriculum and the
artwork.
Reconstruction
Students will examine the John Rogers sculpture,
Taking the
Oath (1866) and interact with museum educator in a question and
answer session relating to the curriculum and the artwork.
Industrial Growth
Students will investigate and interpret E.L. Henry's painting,
First Railroad Train on the Mohawk and Hudson, to
understand the economic factors that contributed to industrial
growth in the North and the impact of industrial growth in the
North.
Robber Barons
Students will examine the Walter Palmer portrait of Thomas
Olcott entitled
Library at Arbor Hill. The Olcott
portrait will provide them with a local case study of a
successful entrepreneur during the age of industrialization.
How did Olcott earn his wealth? How did Olcott use his
wealth?
Industrial City
Students will view John Wilson's painting,
View of
State Street,
to evaluate the Albany as a case study of an industrial city at
the turn of the century. They will compare the Wilson
painting from mid-century with the turn of the century
photograph,
