Follow up Activity
Students will engage in a sensory interactive activity.
(Students blindfolded or with eyes closed, will be exposed to
a variety of tactile stimulants, odors, and sounds (examples
of objects, smells and sounds such as beach sand, a slimy
substance, cotton balls, warm water, cold water, flowers,
sulphur, peppermint, recorded sounds, such as a
gritty/grinding sound, waves, wind, etc.) They will be
asked to write down a word or two that describes their
reaction to each of the stimuli. They will not try to
identify the object, etc. but rather will seek to describe the
sensory or memory experience of the object, smell and sound.
Set up for Sensory Activity
Bins of various substances will be on a table, headphones
and a tape recording of various sounds, and a collection of
objects that contain obvious odors. With a blindfold
over the students eyes, they will be lead to each area and
engage with the tactile experience, then continue to the next
station where students (without blindfold, at this point) will
place headphones on and they will write their responses to the
sounds that they hear.
Discussion
How were the two experiences similar and/or different?
(Compare engaging with the sensory stimuli and engaging with
the artwork.)
