Video Conference
Allow students questions to lead into other areas.
Visit Long's
'Santa Cruz Circle' (pan in and around)
"How does 'Santa
Cruz Circle' relate to Richard Long's direct experience of
nature?" (a walking tour of Patagonia) rugged
terrain, random placement and weight recall the exertion and
movement involved in the sculpture's creation.
Discuss balance
in this work
(order/chaos, natural/artificial, physical/conceptual,
interior/exterior, etc.)
Discuss his
choice of forms (circles and lines) and how it imposes order
upon chaos.
How might you
choose a form to create a similar work of art?
Now let's look at Hamish Fulton's work and compare and
contrast it to Richard Longs.
(Remember Longs' textworks?)
(Closeup of each photo and ensuing discussion)
Fine Arts Activity
Take students
outside on a walk to find natural object for the construction
of their own sculpture. Document results with video or
camera.
Motivation:
explore patterns of nature by arranging its building
blocks in unexpected ways. Work with whatever you
notice: twigs, leaves, stones, snow and ice, reeds and
thorns, etc . . . (impose order on chaos) |
