Writing Your Poem

Writing Your Poem

You are going to be writing your own poem in reaction to what you have heard and learned about prejudice and discrimination in major league baseball.  It may be a tribute to a particular player or your thoughts about prejudice, discrimination, and racism.

Directions for Writing Your Poem

Besides having rhyme, most poetry also has a certain rhythm which is produced by a pattern of accented and unaccented syllables.  An unaccented syllable is represented by a      , and an accented syllable is represented by a       .

A typical stanza following this system might be the following or similar to the one I wrote;

8 The wind so cold blew south and north, A

6 And blew into the floor.  B

8 Quoth our goodman to our goodwife,  C

6 “Get up and bar the door.”

Your poem should follow the same rhythm and rhyme pattern as the one above.  It should be at least 3 stanzas (12 lines) long and have a title.

 If you choose to write a poem in free verse form, make sure it has at least 12 lines also.
