Gorilla Quest -
Behind the Scenes at the Buffalo Zoo
This
comprehensive interactive videoconference program unit
is designed for use in a wide variety of class
organization models. It can be used effectively in
self-contained classes. For teachers working in
inter-disciplinary teams, the program could be a
team-wide project or implemented by one or two subject
area teachers within the team framework.
The basic program has four phases, which are discussed
in the
teacher’s guide:
-
researching basic information about gorillas,
-
learning the functions served by zoos,
-
determining what a zoo would have to provide to
adequately meet the needs of a gorilla in its care,
and
-
videoconferencing with an educator at the Buffalo Zoo.
The program can stand alone as a short-term project, or
it can serve as an introduction to many subject-specific
extension activities.
Not only
will teachers and students explore the wonder and
excitement of the
Buffalo Zoo, (the nation's third oldest zoo) -
- from their classrooms - - but they will be
guided by the zoo experts.
The
project VIEW teacher development team is composed of
teachers from
Schalmont Middle School and
Mont Pleasant Middle School.
This team has collaborated with experts from
the museum in order to develop this complete interactive
learning program.
The
Buffalo Zoo, located in 23.5 acres of Delaware Park in
Western New York, has an
educational department which is committed to
saving the world's wildlife through outreach and
education.
