| For
more than 65 years, Jacob Lawrence was both an
impassioned observer and storyteller who explored
the diverse aspects of the African American
experience. He focused on the struggle for
freedom and justice in America from the Civil War
period through the 20th century.
Balancing
line, color, form and gesture, Lawrence's drawings
and painting communicate his reflections on
American culture and make visible the realities of
race and racial differences in the process of
Americanization. This program will follow
themes in Lawrence's work including migration,
discrimination, race relations, family and
community, and labor - to examine the tales of
hardship and despair, and the hopes and dreams
people experienced as they sough a new life.
Participants will experience Lawrence's visual and
written narrative and the history of this period
in America will be conveyed through the emotion
and feeling that is the hallmark of Lawrence's
art.
