Summary:
Students will take part in a videoconference with the Cincinnati Art
Museum. During the videoconference, students will have the
opportunity to interpret possible symbolism and functions of African
objects in the Museum. The Museum will also show the
students five objects from its African collection (Senufo Door
Panel, Kongo Power Figure, Cameroon Carved Stool, Cameroon Mask) and
describe their symbolism and function. The students will also
be asked about the symbols they chose to describe themselves.
Objectives
Students
will interact with the Cincinnati Art Museum staff through a fifty
minute videoconference.
Students will learn about symbols in
African Art
Students will use the Museum objects
to reinforce activities completed in preparation for this
videoconference.
Concepts
A
videoconference conducted by the Cincinnati Art Museum staff extends
students learning through emphasis on the viewing and discussion of
art objects. During this videoconference with Museum, students
will explore African Art and examples of symbols and symbolism in
those objects.
Video Conference Schedule
5
minutes Introduction to CAM staff (This is also a buffer
time in case of connection complications.)
10 minutes Brief discussion of student pre-video conferencing
activities.
20 minutes Museum staff will lead students in an in-depth
investigation of selected art objects. Objects include:
Senufo Door Panel
Congo Power Figure
Cameroon Carved Stool
Cameroon Mask
Congo Carved Tusk
10 minutes Questions and student sharing of art projects.

minutes Closing (This is also buffer time in case of
connection complications)
