Indiana State Museum
Connecting through videoconferencing technology, the Indiana State Museum has the ability to reach out to audiences from 20 locations throughout the museum. Whether we’re standing below a 1914 Dusenberg racecar or behind the scenes in our conservation lab, your students will be able to explore with us the worlds of art, science and culture. Watch as the camera becomes your classroom to reveal Ice Age animals, a Native American wigwam, original works of art and rare artifacts.

To bring the museum to your site, choose from the list of pre–scheduled programs below or contact the distance learning coordinator to see if alternative dates are available. Please note when scheduling that program times are Indianapolis time. Indianapolis does not observe daylight savings (spring & summer – Central time; fall & winter – Eastern time).

Genetic Odyssey
Grades 9 - 12

See how your vote could influence the future! Experience an interactive presentation exploring the impact of genetic research on our lives. Meet the Caldwell’s—a futuristic family who in the year 2025 are facing issues about cloning, genetic engineering, and crop modification. As you watch and listen to each scenario you will be asked to vote on how you think the family should handle their choices. At the conclusion we will fast forward to the year 2050 and see how your votes played out in the Caldwell’s future.

Horseless Carriages and the Track Made of Bricks
Grades 3 – 12
Standards: History, Economics, Social Studies.
At the turn of the 20th century, Indiana was experiencing a shift
from agriculture to manufacturing, from hand tools to big machinery
as people migrated from the farm into the city. Hoosier auto
manufacturers such as Stutz, Studebaker and Cord had difficulty
competing with the big companies of Detroit but continued to play a
pivotal role in the industry while Indianapolis became home to the
greatest spectacle in racing.

History Quiz Show
Grade 4

and Individuals, Society and Culture
And the answer is... Experience a quiz show designed around Indiana history. In a game show format, two to four sites will compete against each other to win the title of "ISM Master Minds." Assess your students' knowledge of Indiana history as they identify artifacts and examine maps and documents while trying to outwit their competitors. Get ready to play! Fourth grade history standards were used as guidelines for creating the quiz show questions.

WWII on
the Homefront
Grades 9 - 12

What do Hershey bars, cartoons and Silly Putty have to do with WWII? From rationing to war bonds and mass production, there wasn’t a single part of American life untouched by the war. Students will be able to identify artifacts, analyze social changes and speculate what impact propaganda had on American life as they discover what was happening on the “Homefront.”

Arbor Day and Tim Womick
Grade(s): 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Tim Womick, also known as a
modern day Johnny Appleseed, will help the museum honor Arbor Day by
sharing some of his stories as an educator and experiences working
for the National Tree Trust where he, among other things, created an
outreach program that stresses the importance of trees and forests.
In his job, Tim has traveled all over the country and overseas to
spread his message. He has also planted thousands of trees with the
help of, "preschoolers to prisoners, Hollywood types to homeless,
and senior citizens to senators" and ran and cycled 30,000 miles for
tree related events. Tim knows his trees and is one lively performer
who is incredibly passionate about education.
