The Louisville Science Center is located in Louisville, Kentucky.  The mission of the Science Center is to encourage the public's understanding of science, mathematics and technology through hands-on exhibits, IMAX films and educational programs.

The Louisville Science Center offers a variety of hour-long Distance Learning programs via the Kentucky TeleLinking Network (KTLN). They are designed to support National Science Standards in science, mathematics and technology. Teacher preparation materials and supplies for hands-on activities are provided for each interactive link.

Students have the opportunity to perform experiments while participating in a live, interactive video conference link. Each program includes an equipment kit of supplies, pre-lab and post lab activities, and suggestions of ways to expand the learning experience.

Dates and times of hands-on programs are scheduled by request.

For details, call the School Services Coordinator at (800) 591-2203, ext. 6143 or send e-mail to kelly.raines@loukymetro.org

Programs

Chemistry
Chemistry Roots - Grades 2-12
Chemistry runs in your family! Take a hands-on approach to learning about the history of chemistry and industry in this region. From soap making to distillation, fried chicken to coal, explore Kentucky's rich heritage through hands-on chemistry.

Physics
The Force Is Right - Grades 2-12
What keeps structures standing? We'll explore balance, tension, compression and flexion forces to find out. Using hands-on models, students will learn about the physics of building bridges, skyscrapers, houses and even sculptures.

Wave Watch - Grades 2-12
Get ready to catch a wave! Discover the waves around you — light waves, sound waves, water waves, infrared waves and electromagnetic waves — as we explore the science and properties of each and their roles in communications and energy.

Physics Rules - Grades 2-12
Why do curvy roads have lower speed limits than straight roads? How do rain and ice affect road friction? Discover how Newton's three laws of motion plus friction, centripetal force and reaction time have shaped traffic laws.

Space Science

StarStation One™: Living and Working In Space
Grades 2-12
What kind of physical and mental training do astronauts undergo before blastoff? What are the challenges of working and living in space and how do they overcome them? Learn about the International Space Station while training to be an astronaut. Students will have the opportunity to perform hands-on experiments that will help them understand how astronauts live and work in the environment of space.

Health Science

Transmission Tracker

Grades 4-12
Someone in your class has a deadly disease! Watch it spread. Follow its path. Use the tools of an epidemiologist to solve the mystery. Investigate how epidemics are spread and learn how to protect yourself.

Work It Out!

Grades 4-12
Use the components of fitness and the Principles of Frequency, Intensity, Time & Type (FITT) to explore personal cardiovascular health and physical activity levels. Learn the difference between aerobic and anaerobic activities. Create your own activity to take home or do it in the classroom!

MEET THE EXPERTS

Exploring Math and Science Careers - Grades 9-12
Interview experts about career opportunities in the fields of math and science. Programs take place from noon to 1 p.m. EST.
