Registration Information

The Milwaukee Public Museum has been presenting interactive videoconferencing at an astounding pace for the last year+, and with the generous support of a local donor, we are able to offer videoconferencing sessions to schools from across the country at an even more economical level. Our two paid levels of service (Passport Fieldtrips and Passport Workshops) have been subsidized by $25 each, bringing the program fees for a 60-minutes session to $75.00 and a 45-minute session to $50.

Connectivity

All sessions can be delivered by either ISDN or IP, and are available ON-DEMAND, not only at pre-selected dates and times.

(Egypt) The Quest for Immortality: A Pharaoh From Life to Death

Summary: Understand the significance of a pharaoh's life by examining the ancient Egyptians' complex beliefs about life and death. Explore how Egyptians conceptualized the beginning and end of life and the preparations they took for the afterlife.

Grades K-12

Summary: Witness one example of the mummification process from ancient Egypt, including some of the mythology, ceremony and legends that surrounded death during the New Kingdom (1550 B.C. - 1070 B.C). Follow the preparations of Princess Nofret, our fictitious 18th dynasty noble, for an eternity in the afterlife.

Summary: Over the course of Egyptian history, three pharaohs stand out for reshaping Egypt's religious and civic traditions-Thutmose III, Hatshepsut and Akhenaten. Meet these 18th Dynasty pharaohs and learn how their reigns, which included religious changes and great cultural developments, led to an Egyptian revolution.

Summary: Mix math, geometry and history with ancient Egyptian intrigue! Learn how, for more than 3,500 years, ancient Egyptian art was governed by strict mathematical rules called the Canon of Proportions that determined how figures could be drawn, and explore the tomb that unlocked the mysteries of these fascinating laws.

A Tribute to Survival: North American Indians

Summary: American Indians have struggled, thrived and "evolved" throughout the Western Hemisphere for thousands of years. Participants in this interactive workshop will explore specifically the history of North American Indians, the impact of commodity exchange, the difficulty of adapting to life under European influence, the evolution of federal Indian policy and ongoing attempts to preserve traditional culture. Your guide will present a series of challenging questions for students to discuss in small groups after the session.

Dinosaurs: Unearthing the Facts

Summary: This 45-minute session explores the connections between dinosaurs, reptiles and modern-day birds. Also examine the work of paleontologists and the work they do to help piece together history more the 65-million years old.

Vestiges of Culture: Pre-Columbian Panama

Summary: Explore the myths and religion of Pre-Columbian Panama through the ceramics and gold artifacts left behind by the cultures that inhabited the isthmus from 1000 - 1500 A.D. The symbolism and significance of the objects reflect the influence of the natural world.

A Tribute to Survival: Indian Beadwork

Grades 4-12

Summary: An overview of the history of quill and beadwork by North American Indians, this session will look at some early uses of porcupine quills and other naturally occurring materials for adornment and ceremony. Students will be able to learn some simple bead patterns and look at some beautiful examples from the Museum's collections. Wonderful for ART classes!

The Puelicher Butterfly Wing: Operation Lepidoptera

Summary: Lepidoptera is the scientific name given to butterflies and moths. Participants in this interactive workshop will explore systematics, the study of interrelationships between different plants and animals. Your guide will also highlight key concepts including habitat, diversity, human impact and conservation.
