The New York Hall of Science, New York City's hands-on science and technology center features more than 225 hands-on exhibits.  Explore the wonder and excitement of biology, chemistry and physics.  Exhibits include Marvelous Molecules, What About AIDS?, Hidden Kingdoms, Sound Sensations and the Science Playground.

Virtual Visit
Visit and interact with the Hall of Science from your classroom using the latest video conferencing technology. The Virtual Visit will link your class with Explainers at the Hall, providing a rich, interactive science learning experience. A Virtual Visit Program consists of a 45-minute exploration of selected areas of the Hall's exhibits, demonstrations and activities illustrating science concepts. Materials and instructions for a follow-up Make-it & Take-it activity are provided. Compatible equipment required or you may rent the Virtual Visit Kit following a one-day training session (see Virtual Visit in the Training and Equipment Rental Programs section).

Reservations are required.  For more information or a copy of the Science Programs for Schools and Teachers brochure, call the Education department at 718.699.0005 ext. 320.

Virtual Lessons Include:

Session: 45 min. (max. 32)
Fee: $150 within New York City; $200 outside New York City

Grades: K – 2
Sophisticated Shadows
Do a little dance, have a little fun, and in the process learn all about shadows. Visit exhibits and do activities to discover what you need to make a shadow, how to change its size and learn how a shadow differs from the object that created it. Make your own shadow puppet.

Grades: 2 – 4
Reflecting on Reflection
Get a close-up view of the eye and find out how it works by participating in a cow's eye dissection.  Examine the reflective property of light and the role it plays in seeing. Discover what we see when light is reflected from different surfaces.

Grades: 2 – 10
Hidden Kingdoms – The World of Microbes
Explore some of the smallest of living things as you visit exhibits, look through microscopes and participate in a video-microscope demonstration. From inside a refrigerator to inside your nose, discover how microbes are part of your daily life.

Grades: 3 – 6
Revealing Illusions
Gain insight into the workings of visual perception as you explore exhibits featuring optical illusions. Do activities to trick your brain as you create your own optical illusion.

Grades: 4 – 8
Back to the Earth – Composting & Recycling
See nature's sanitation crew at work as you visit exhibits with microbes, insects and worms. Get a closer look at some of these small creatures through the use of microscopes and hand lenses.

Grades: 5 – 8
Feedback
Find out how biological and mechanical feedback systems use "checks and balances" to maintain ideal states. Visit mechanical systems such as an airplane propeller, a working steam engine and a windmill and monitor your heart rate and your eye's response to light. Discover what happens when you lose important input from a system.

Grades: 7 – 11
Convection Currents
Observe convection in action and then investigate the phenomenon by exploring exhibits and participating in demonstrations dealing with density, the phases of matter and atomic structure. Through multiple powers of magnification find out how scientists discovered the existence of atoms.

Grades: 7 – 11
Molecules and Energy
Investigate the shared chemistry of living things by learning what we have in common with plants, bacteria and marine mammals. Calculate how many molecules compose your body, determine how to measure calories and observe what heat emitted from a person's body looks like on an infrared camera.

Note: Custom Virtual Visit programs can be developed for an additional one-time fee of $500.
Reservations are required 718.699.0005 ext. 303.

Student Workshops (Back to Top)
Session:
45 min. (max. 32)
Fee: $150 per group + group admission fee

Grades: K – 2
Five Senses
Observation Skills: Learn how our five senses work together to perceive information in the world around us. Students participate in hands-on activities that allow them to observe and draw conclusions about the different senses.

Grades: K – 2
It's a Small, Small World
Small Things: See the very small through magnifying lenses and microscopes. Learn to look for tiny details.  A good introduction to the "Hidden Kingdoms" microbiology exhibition. Take home your own magnifying lens.

Grades: 2 – 4
Reflecting on Mirrors
Mirrors: Enter the realm of the looking glass. Experiment with light reflection and symmetry. Build your own mirror maze or kaleidoscope.

Grades: 3 – 5
Journey into Microspace
Microbiology: Use microscopes to investigate the micro world of protozoa and algae. Make slides to observe and analyze the shapes and colors of microbes and how they move and feed.  Take home your own magnifying lens.

Grades: 3 – 6
Science Detective
Logic & Puzzles: Solve a crime using clues, fingerprints, paper chromatography, and coded messages.  Analyze fingerprints and make your own alphabet wheel to compose and decode secret messages.

Grades: 3 – 7
The Eyes Have It
Human Eye and Illusions: Unveil the world of 3-D perception with the aid of color filters.  Make your own 3-D glasses and create optical illusions.

Grades: 3 – 8
It's a Matter of Chemistry
Canvass the phases of matter and observe what happens when liquids with different properties are mixed together. Convert common household materials into your own play dough.

Grades: 4 – 7
Push, Pull Yank and Crank
Simple Machines: Define force, weight and work. Experiment with simple machines such as levers, pulleys and wheels to determine the relationship that exists between force and work. Make your own simple machine to take home

Grades 4 – 8
Float, Sink or Flink
Students will be able to observe the properties of mass, volume, density and buoyancy in a fun activity based lesson to see what makes things float, sink or flink. Make a hydrometer to measure the density of various unknown liquids.
