The Ohio Historical Society's distance learning programming transports students through time to historic venues ranging from ice age glaciers & prehistoric mounds to log cabins and "safe houses" on the Underground Railroad.

Video streaming, remote cameras, blue-screen projections, and theatrical sets and costumes are among the innovative techniques used to make history come to life for students from kindergarten through high school. Each program has been designed with the new Social Studies Academic Content Standards in mind.

Distance learning programs are offered on a regular basis during the school season and by appointment at Fort Ancient or Ohio Historical Center. Programs are priced at $50.00 for each in-state program and $125.00 for connections out-of-state.

Pre-History

The Moundbuilders:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum
Grade Levels: 4 - 12
Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: The cultures of the Adena and Hopewell mound builders will be explored in this informative program, including their trade, cooking, lifestyle, and mound constructions.

The Ohio Valley:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum

Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: What was Ohio like during prehistoric times? Learn about the different prehistoric cultures that once inhabited the Ohio Valley. Spanning nearly 13,000 years of prehistory, students will learn about each culture; including the Paleo, Archaic, and Woodland cultures.

Agriculture and Ceramics:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum
Grade Levels: 4 - 12
Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: Students will learn about the prehistoric culture's shift from hunting and gathering society to one that was agriculturally based. The Late Archaic and Woodland peoples will be covered, as well as their increasing use of pottery and ceramics.

History
Archaeology:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum
Grade Levels: 4th - 6th
Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: Students are instructed in basic terms, methods, and tools of archaeology. The class will also compare and contrast the archaeology of yesterday with the way it is practiced today.   Online Registration Form

Native American Culture: Past and Present:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum
Grade Levels: 4th - 12th
Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: Students learn about the culture of American Indians, past and present, while talking with American Indian, Connie Herald, about topics such as food, clothing, housing and schooling.  Online Registration Form.

Show Me and Tell Me about Native American Heritage:
Location: Fort Ancient Museum
Grade Levels: 1st - 8th
Program Length: 30 minutes to 1 program
Description: Younger students will learn how the European contact changed the way the American Indians lived, how metal was introduced, and furs were traded. Online Registration Form

Psst! You Know You Can Make History, Too!:
Location: Ohio Historical Center
Grade Levels: K - 2
Description: What can a 200-year old turtle teach you about history? You'd be surprised! In this program series, students will interact with Arbuckle the 200-year old box turtle and with Miss Priscilla to learn about Ohio's past. The programs are designed to build a foundation for an understanding of history and the effects of the passage of time and change. The series will help students understand how oral tradition, written word, and artifacts combine to leave evidence about ways of the past and the people who came before us. Students will explore life in early Ohio through images, primary sources, artifacts, music, craft projects, stories, and games. All programs are interactive, encouraging students to explore, discover, compare, contrast, and draw conclusions for themselves. Description: This program examines what Ohio was like for many of the first settlers. It will explore the kinds of trees that grew in Ohio at that time, how the settlers used them, and why they were so important to them.   Online Registration Form.

Description: The building of the pioneer house and the development of the farmstead will be explored in this second program. Students will learn about living needs and styles, building materials, and methods of construction (hand vs. machine labor).   Online Registration Form.

Description: This third program in the series examines the inside of the settler's house, daily living needs, and furnishings, as well as sources of water, heat, and light. Online Registration Form.

Description: The daily life of people on the frontier is the focus of this fourth program in the series. The students will learn about the role of children at that time including their education, chores, responsibilities, and leisure-time activities. Online Registration Form.

Description: This last program in the series examines the ways in which we learn about past history and how we can "make history" too, by our diaries, journals, photographs, objects, and our written and oral histories for future generations. Online Registration Form.

Who Do You Trust? (Formerly called Can She Trust You with Her Life?):
Location: Ohio Historical Center
Grade Levels: 4th, 5th, and 8th
Program Length: 45-minute program
Description: The popular Underground Railroad Program, "Who Do You Trust?" is undergoing significant revisions, updates, and changes to be in alignment with the Ohio Department of Education's new Academic Content Standards and to increase higher level learning and critical thinking skills.
