The distance learning initiative of the Philadelphia Museum of Art uses ISDN-based videoconferencing to enable virtual tours of the Museum's collections. In this pioneering program, real-time interactions with the Museum's expert staff allow students and teachers to explore the fascinating world of art without ever leaving their classrooms.

We offer professional development sessions and demonstrations. No charge for schools and districts; for-profit organizations are charged $100 (average time of 20 minutes).

Technical Requirements
You must have an ISDN-based videoconferencing system to participate. The Museum's systems are broadly compatible with many other ISDN systems and are able to connect up to x384 kbps.

Arranging Your Virtual Visit
Please contact us at least two weeks in advance. We provide programs on demand to meet your scheduling needs. Programs are offered Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Videoconference Programs
All lessons are adaptable for grades K through 12 to meet your students' needs.

Introductory Lessons: These lessons provide a general introduction to art and artists from diverse areas of the collections.

Learning to Look
Develop visual perception skills and learn specific strategies for looking at and understanding works of art.
Elements of Art, Principles of Design
Explore how artists use the elements of art and the principles of design - including line, color, texture and balance - in their creations.

In-depth Lessons: These lessons feature more specific periods and concepts in art history, and they are best suited for curricula enhancement.

Art of Asia
Investigate and compare works of art from Asian countries, including India, China and Japan.
The Art of the Japanese Tea Ceremony
Discover the customs, aesthetics and philosophies associated with this centuries-old tradition.
Images of the Medieval Era
Discover the ways art flourished in medieval Europe and see how various artistic mediums reveal clues about life in those times. (A set of teaching posters may be purchased for this lesson.)
Days of Knights
Learn about the history, use and aesthetics of armor from the Museum's collection. This lesson includes a live demonstration of armor pieces.
The Impressionist Era
Learn about this intriguing art movement, and explore the impact of artists such as Renoir, Degas, Cassatt and Monet on Parisian society at the turn of the nineteenth century. (A set of teaching posters may be purchased for this lesson.)
Modern & Contemporary Art
Investigate the changing role of artists, their methods and conceptual approaches in European and American societies.
American Art: From Colony to Nation
Explore early American life by examining and discussing paintings and furniture from George Washington's day.
African American Artists
Examine works by influential artists, such as Horace Pippin, Henry Ossawa Tanner and Elizabeth Catlett. (A set of teaching posters may be purchased for this lesson.)
Photography
View photographs from the Museum's collection and explore the ways in which artists use this medium to record and alter our perception of the world around us.
Special Exhibitions
Each year the Distance Learning Program offers new lessons in conjunction with the Museum's special exhibitions. starting in February 2004, we will be offering Manet and the Sea. This lesson will be offered through the end of the current school year.
