The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park in California.  The 100-acre zoo features some of the world's rarest wildlife including giant pandas and koalas.  The zoo also has a lush botanical garden, 4,000 animals which represent 800 species.

Videoconferences are available with San Diego Zoo educators on a variety of topics. Animal presentations by our education staff can cover several animal and conservation subjects, including:

Animal adaptations—How do an animal's body parts and habits help it survive in its environment?
Animal classifications—What is a bird, mammal, reptile, or insect?
Endangered Species—What factors are threatening wild animals and plants? What can you do to help?

The science content of these presentation topics is most appropriate for school groups in grades kindergarten through six. All can be adapted for family audiences at non-school events. All videoconference programs originate from our Zoo classroom, and include animals from our animal ambassador collection. Animal ambassadors include a variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles from around the world that can be handled by Zoo educators and brought to our classroom for an up-close look on camera.

Additional program topics, including programs for middle and high school students, are in development and will be announced as they become available.

The videoconference program includes a 30- to 50-minute presentation. We have ISDN capability at 128k or 384k (H.320). The faster speed is recommended if possible—animals tend to move around, and movement turns to a blur at the slower speeds. We are also on the RoseTel System network. Reservations for videoconferences must be made at least four weeks in advance. Videoconferences can be conducted on Tuesdays or Thursdays, beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time. The program fee is $93 per session. Please limit your group size to no more than two classes per session to assure a quality program for your students.
