WVIA is a public TV station in Pennsylvania which offers students throughout the country a number of distance learning opportunities. WVIA has been videoconferencing with schools in twelve states and can facilitate up to three or four field trips per day. Students can tour the WVIA facility from four videoconferencing cameras located in the TV and radio stations, the engineer master control rooms and the station boardroom. Station personnel will walk students around the broadcast areas, demonstrating how TV and radio are made while allowing interaction between the students and the engineer, producer and radio personality.
Videoconferencing Programs
Public Speaking - Grade 4 - 12 - Helps students overcome the
anxieties of speaking in public.
How to Produce a News Broadcast - Grades 5 - 12 - For
students interested in the field of news reporting or anchoring.
Covers the various roles in a newscast from the producer to writer
and the positions that make up a news team.
Production - Grades 4 - 12 - An award-winning WVIA staff
conducts variety of presentations to suit student needs. Talk
to producers, directors, on-air promotions producer to get firsthand
look at the ins and outs of broadcasting.
Tour WVIA - Grades K -12 - Get firsthand look at how a television or radio station operates. These interactive tours takes students into the master control and production control rooms, or radio master control room.
Radio Station Operations - Grades K-12 - Introduces students to writing & producing, how to use your voice; accents pitch & inflections. Gives students opportunity to learn how to prepare and interview.
Ethics in the Media - Grades 11 and 12 students who are working on their newspaper o in electronic journalism classes. - "How far will the media go to get a story?" "Who feels the consequences of the choice that is made?" These are some of the questions asked for the presentation.
Business - Business & Accounting Students in grades 7 - 12 - WVIA business staff gives students insight on accounts payable, receivable, payroll, audits and direct deposits. Talk to business staff.
Corporate Communications - Grades 6 - 12 - For students who want to join the world of journalism. WVIA corporate communications department covers topics such as public relations, press releases, and public information. Focuses on advertising, magazine editing and publishing and design for students involved with school newspaper.
Engineering - Grades 7 - 12 - Learn all about technology for engineers at WVIA. Covers technical operations including digital media, electro mechanical engineering, hydraulics, and fluidics. Interact with the engineering staff.
Development - Development department professionals take students through step-by-step general marketing skills and telemarketing. Also covers budget planning and creative fundraising.
Management Operations - Grades 8 - 12 - Learn management skills, policy making, and how to run a television & radio station.
Fee: $35.00 for non-member WVIA ITV+ schools and is 40 minutes long.
