About the Provider

Want to visit the Museum without a long bus trip? Ride the N.C. Information Highway (NCIH) instead and experience an interactive Museum “field trip” using two-way full motion audio and video. The hour-long program comes to you, live and direct from the Museum’s Windows on the World studio.

Your class will interact with a Museum guide they see and hear on a large TV monitor at your closest NCIH classroom site. Your students will appear on a monitor at the Museum. Students actively participate throughout the program and can see and hear responses from students at other participation sites, getting a taste of the high-tech environment of today’s workplace. They work with instructional materials and natural history specimens from the Museum teaching collection sent to you prior to the session.

Program Topics

Dinosaurs
Grades 1—12
What is a fossil? What dinosaur fossils have we found? How do we use these fossils to develop an understanding of dinosaurs and what they looked like? Learn about dinosaurs found in North Carolina and see Acrocanthosaurus, the “Terror of the South,” on display in the Museum. Students will examine real fossils and fossil replicas during the class. The program is adapted to each age group.

Migrate, Hibernate, Pupate
Grades 1—12
Where do butterflies and moths go in winter? Explore the life history of some of North Carolina’s flying jewels. Live butterflies, moths, and caterpillars will help us discover which strategies butterflies and moths use to survive cold North Carolina winters. Learn how to tag monarchs to track their migration routes. Develop plans for your own butterfly garden. The program is adapted for each age group.

Animal Signs
Grades 1—12
How do we know when an animal is around if we can’t see it? What “signs” do animals leave behind? Examine evidence of feeding activity, tracks, and scat as you learn to identify animals by their signs. Discover what signs tell you about the behavior of animals that have passed your way. The program is adapted for each age group.

Tropical Connections
Grades 1—12
How is North Carolina connected to the tropics? Examine some of the plants and animals that we share and gain an appreciation for the interconnections between our regions. Live tropical animals will be featured. The program is adapted for each age group.

Coastal Carolina
Grades 1—12
Get ready for a trip to North Carolina’s coast! Using the Coastal North Carolina gallery as our focus, we will explore our state’s coast from salt marsh to deep ocean. Students will use models as well as real specimens to explore these diverse habitats and their inhabitants. The program is adapted for each age group.

North Carolina's Natural Treasures
Grades 1—12

What plants, animals, and minerals represent North Carolina to you? Are they the rare specimens found only in the Carolinas, such as the Venus’ flytrap? Or are they things that you find all over the state, such as the Carolina wren? Students will use hands-on materials to learn more about North Carolina treasures. The program is adapted for each age group.
