Project VIEW and Ball State Teachers College
have collaborated to offer an extraordinary series of
ELECTRONIC FIELD TRIPS.

What is an Electronic Field Trip?

An electronic Field Trip is a content-driven program that offers students in grades K-12 learning opportunities that they could not otherwise be able to experience.  The field trip is a combination of a live broadcast accompanied with on-line curriculum that include pre-activities, activities during the broadcast, and post-activities.  The program is intended to inspire children to learn curriculum that meets the national and state teaching standards, explores new learning concepts and gives students the opportunities to explore career opportunities.

Who is Involved in An Electronic Field Trip?
Each electronic field trip includes scientists or area specialist, a team of grade-appropriate teachers, project director, On-line specialists, producer/director, local teachers and students, the education office and the funding source.

What is the process for developing a program?

Developing a field trip and program is a multi-step process including the following:

1.  Meeting with scientists/content specialists for informal conversation.

2.  Talk with team of teachers (Two-Way Videoconference)

3.  Develop program with team.

4.  Integration of On-Line Resources.

5.  Meet with local teachers and students

6.  Reality Check

7.  Meet with the team of teachers, scientists, on-line experts, producers, local teachers

8.  Develop marketing strategy and promotions

Tips:

Avoid holidays, the beginning and end of school, statewide testing days.

Process usually takes six months for new programs, one to two months for repeat shows

Process works best when you have the various pieces and players in place and everyone has agreed to the process of development

Less is better, be realistic with the amount of content and the time allotted.

Three-four areas covered in a 1 - 1/2 hour program is feasible.

Remember that you are opening doors for students and providing opportunities students wouldn't otherwise have.

The more specific you can speak to the standards/content of the program, the better teaches will understand the program and how to fit it into their curriculum.
