Welcome to Everson

  • Visual of Outside of Museum
  • Share some artwork from Everson collection and talk about them together.

Reading an Image - Discussion
Inquiry-based discussion for each image:

  • What's going on in this picture?
  • What do you see that makes you say that?
  • What more can you find?

Image 1 - Grooms

  • Connection to pop-up books
  • Where he grew up, what he like (connect to students)
  • share why Red Grooms is interested in making this kind of art

Wanted art to be fun and look realistic

Loved cities, wanted to show people good things/qualities about cities

Red Grooms includes people, buildings, cars, pets, etc. and every one of them is important to make up the city.

Image 2 - Rauschenberg

  • Photographs of self, family or friends?

A photo of self is called a "self-portrait"

  • Photo of outside of self versus inside self

X-ray - machine sees through into the body and takes picture of bones

  • Why would an artist create a self-portrait with x-rays from his body?

  • Do you think this (image) is a self-portrait?  Why/Why not?

Robert Rauschenberg uses a lot of different things to make his self-portrait, including many x-rays, photos, drawings and rubbings

Image 3 - Shapiro

  • Like to use fabric, lace, and buttons to create her art work

Where do we usually see these kinds of things?

Who usually works with these kinds of things?

  • The name of this work is "Explode."

What does it mean when something explodes?

Why do you think she chose this title?

Miriam Shapiro needed lots of things to make her collage look like it is exploding.

Image 4 - Starn Twins

  • Mike and Doug Starn are twin brothers.

They have been making photos since they were 13 years old.

Inquiry - Well-used Objects
When someone gives you a photograph, what do you do with it?  When you have a toy or stuffed animal that you love very much, you play with it a lot.  It can't help but get dirty or rip in some places.

  • Mike and Doug handle their photographs a lot, so when they them around, or take them out put them away the photos become ripped or smeared from touching.

Some people might say that their art is messy.

So why do you think someone might decide to make art that is messy or not perfect?

  • Mike and Doug Starn used a lot of photographs, pieces of tape to make up their photo collage.

Putting Things Together - Collage Discussion

All of the collages we looked at included many different things that the artists put together to make a piece of artwork and tell a story about themselves.  Some of these items, like an x-ray, are usually seen in other places, like a doctor's office.  But when artists combine them with other things, thy can be seen in a very different and new way.

We're going to look at some objects now.  We'll show you them one at a time and you can think about what the object is and where we usually see it.

Show object 1 (objects tbd)
Show object 2
Show object 3

  • Place the three objects together
  • Now that the different objects are together, what kid of story do they tell?

We looked at three artists and saw the way they took many different things and put them together to make one collage.
