YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW
ART INFLUENCES ART
Artists often influence one another.
The artists of the Hudson River School have inspired many other
artists over the years to observe and paint nature.

Autumn-on the Hudson River
Jasper F. Cropsey
|

Thomas Locker (contemporary) |
What do you see? What do you think? What do you feel?
Look at Jasper Cropsey’s painting above (left). There are many ways to
look at it.
- What special effects did Cropsey use to get your attention? What are
the main colors highlighted in the painting? What parts of nature does
Cropsey use?
- What does the painting remind you of? How does it make you feel?
Compare Cropsey's work to the painting above (right) done by Thomas
Locker. Ask yourself the same questions.
You Are the Critic:
Pretend that you have been hired by a very prestigious Art Gallery to
compare and contrast these two paintings. You are expected to write a full
report discussing similarities and differences in the techniques used by
Cropsey and Locker and the effect that the paintings have on others.
