Asher B. Durand                                                                                               Student Activity

In 1837, a sketching expedition to Schroon Lake, in the Adirondacks, with his close friend Thomas Cole, seemed to have determined Durand’s decision to concentrate on landscape paintings.

Asher Durand - An Old Man’s Reminiscences

Durand made annual summer sketch trips in the Catskill Mountains of New York State.  Two of his most famous paintings were An Old Man’s Reminiscences (right), completed in 1845, and Pastoral Landscape, finished in 1861.

Durand was recognized as a leader of American landscape painting in the 19th century.  He was one of the most well known artists from the Hudson River School.
