Although you can visit many of the actual places that are in the paintings of Cole, Cropsey, and Durand, you can also get inspiration from your backyard, a park, or field near you.

The artists of the Hudson River School could not have been so successful at painting the landscape without having a love of nature combined with the interest of a scientist.  As cities like New York started to grow with buildings, factories, and people, artists like Thomas Cole worried that the rural areas would suffer.  The railroad brought visitors and more business northward right through the Hudson Valley.

The artists of the Hudson River may have been the area's naturalists, conservationists, and environmentalists helping others realize that it was important to protect the air, water, and land.  Without those protections all wildlife would have become endangered too.
