Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures
Grade 6, 7, 8

The videoconference program addresses the following NYS Learning Standards:

Arts

Standard 4
Understanding the cultural dimension and contributions of the arts.  Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society.

English Language Arts
Standard 3
Students will read, write, listen and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

Standard 4
Students will read, write, listen and speak for social interaction

This integration plan was used by a Grade 7 English Teacher at Bethlehem Central Middle School.

Learning Objectives
1.  to promote understanding & caring for other cultures

2.  integrating social studies, art and ELA

3.  to learn stories from other cultures

This videoconference is part of the storytelling unit.

Time Required:

Planning:  60 Minutes

Pre Lesson:  Pre-conference 1 class period

Activities:  reading stories form different cultures, creating puppets, and performance 2 weeks

Implementation:  1 1/2 class periods

Post Lessons:  2 classes

Assessment:  Completion of the puppets, metacognitive activity, and  story sharing with other students - 1 week.

1.  Preconference - November 6 in LL of LMC 8:20 - 9:06

2.  Conference - November 7 in LL of LMC 8:30 - 9:30
