Native American
Grade 4

Native American - Learning activities about different Native American tribes (Hopi, Plains, and Eastern Woodland).  Students will create a Hopi Kachina puppet.

Purpose/Objective:
Presently covering a unit on Native American Art with 4th grade art classes.  Making Native American drums followed by the video conference with Center of Puppetry.  The students have viewed a video about contemporary Native American Art as well as Kacina dolls, pottery, basketry, sand paintings, weavings, and jewelry of teacher's own personal collection.

A cross curriculum integration will be conducted between the teacher a 4th grade teacher within her New York State Social Studies unit on Native Americans.

After the creation of the Kachina doll puppets, the class will exhibit them for the enrichment of other students, staff and parents.

This integration plan was used by a Grade 4 Art Teacher at W. B. Tecler Elementary School.

The Arts:   Standard 1
Creating, performing and participating in the arts
Students will actively engage in the process that constitutes the creation & performance in the arts (dance, music, theater, and visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts.

Standard 2
Knowing and using arts materials and resources.
Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts in various roles.

Standard 3
Responding to and analyzing works of art.  Students will respond critically to a variety of works in the arts, connecting the individual to other works and to other areas of human endeavor and thought.

Standard 4
Understanding the cultural dimension and contributions of the arts.  Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society.

Time Required:
Participated in a three and half day Project VIEW Training Workshop.  We learned how to manipulate the equipment, contact a provider, and set-up a video conference.  Further information was provided as to school district's to contact for future video conferencing.

Approximately six hours of pre-lesson and activities are required in the art setting.

Implementation involves one half of the teaching day.

Post lessons and activities are about two hours for analyzing and displaying artwork.

Assessment both visual and verbal takes about two hours.

Logistical Planning:

We plan on video conferencing within our district to practice ahead of time.  Tables will be covered and rearranged, materials will be brought into the media center fro the artroom.  Patterns and templates will be cut out in advance.  This class has two students with learning disabilities mainstreamed within the group.  They will have a teacher aide assisting them.  Additional classroom teachers will also be on hand to assist since this is a class of 30 students.

Techniques and Tools
Assessment will be conducted by visually viewing the created Kachina dolls and orally discussing the steps of it's construction along with the art history and history of the Native American tribes of the Hopi, Plains and Eastern Woodland.
