Animal Adaptations
Grades 3 - 8
Adaptable for all grades

In a videoconference with the zoo, students will learn about physical and behavioral characteristics that help animals survive in their specific habitats.  Students will meet animals that are adapted to different climates, eat different foods, and have different strategies for defending themselves.  They will observe "up close" the physical characteristics that help these animals meet their needs in differing environments, and they will create adaptations for a new animal, based on its climate, diet and defense needs.

Objective/Focus
The content of this program will fit into both the science and social studies curriculum.  The teleconference will be a follow up to our ecosystems unit which has been completed.  It will also be tied into our social studies curriculum.  The students learn about the western hemisphere.  They compare/contrast the regions of the western hemisphere, and one factor that is explored is the environmental influences on each region.

The students already learned about the interdependence of living things in an ecosystem and that living things must adapt to survive.  They have been learning about the geography, topography, and climate in the regions of the western hemisphere, so they should have a knowledge of the vocabulary related to this topic.
