Classification Using Problem-Solving
Grade 4

Students will already have had a longterm hands-on experience in animal studies covering habitats, adaptations, identifying characteristics and basic needs.  With this, they will come to understand the basic concept of classification and will be able to apply these concepts and strategies for classification in other areas as well.


Mathematics, Science & Technology
Standard 1
Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers and develop solutions.

This integration plan was used by two  Grade 4 Teachers at Paige Elementary School in the Schenectady City School District.


Standard 4
Students will understand & apply scientific concepts, principles and theories pertaining to the physical setting & living environment  & recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

Standard 7
Students will apply the knowledge & thinking skills of mathematics, science and technology to address real-life problems and make informed decisions.

Time Required:

Planning - 8 hours

Pre Lessons &  Activities - 9 Weeks

Implementation - 2 Hours

Post Lessons -  2 Hours

Assessment - Teacher Designed Assessment 1 Hour

Logistical Planning:

Experience with camera prior to the videoconfenrence.

Practice in speaking clearly and self-identification when teleconferencing.

"Rehearsing" questions prior to the videoconference for the benefit of all students but particularly the bilingual and special education students.

Techniques and Tools:
Authentic assessment techniques using hands-on experiences will be used in conjunction with teacher observation.

A manipulative test with a scoring rubric will be used.
