The World of Manatees
Grade 2\3

Objective/Focus:
The videoconference program will be part of the oceans unit that our second and third graders are studying.  Each students will be learning about an ocean animal, conducting their own research.  We will use our exploration with the Columbus Zoo to be a model for the individual student projects to follow.

Prior to the video conference, the students will write what they already know about oceans on the first day.  The following day, they will write what they know about manatees.  I will then read a book written at a primary level to introduce manatees to the group.  On the third day, together we will formulate questions we would like to ask the zoo educator during our conference.

This integration plan was used by a Grade 2/3 Teacher at Glenmont Elementary School.

After completion of the conference we will create a chart, listing everything we learned about manatees.  The students will then create a book about manatees to share along with their own research at the end of unit celebration.
