Objective/Focus
Sixth graders at TOAST study the
architectural principles of bridges. This
teleconference will occur during the unit and will be a
hands-on reinforcement to principles studied in class.
The students will be provided with background
information of the basic concepts of tension,
compression, load, bridge span etc. in order to
enable them to fully participate in the lesson.
The
following NYS Standards will be addressed by this
teleconference:
Standard 1 - Analysis, Inquiry, and Design
Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific
inquiry, and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose
questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.
Standard 2 - Information Systems
Students will access, generate, process, and
transfer information using appropriate technologies.
Time
Required:
Although actual time required is dependent upon kit
contents, estimates are as follows:
Planning time included a one day with Project VIEW and
additional planning time should be no more than three
hours which includes reviewing the kit.
Pre-lessons and activities are incorporated in the
school's science curriculum. Prior to the video
conference, approximately eighteen hours was dedicated
to the study of Bridges (Three Month Unit).
Implementation of the teleconference will require one
our with a 15-minute follow-up discussion period.
Post
lessons and activities are also incorporated in the
Science curriculum. The students will continue to
study bridges for approximately eight hours over the
course of four weeks.
Assessment - Actual assessment for the video conference
will occur in the follow-up discussion where students
will self-evaluate the experience and share with the
class.
Logistical Planning:
A class discussion will be conducted to prepare the
students for the videoconference experience.
Students will be instructed to introduce themselves to
the presenter and speak loudly and clearly. In
order to accommodate a range of abilities, a small group
of students will be involved in a "practice" video
conference with the instructors from Project VIEW.
Some students will also be provided index cards with
questions for the presenter prior to the conference,
thus giving them the opportunity to practice verbalizing
the question. Students with higher level abilities
will be given the opportunity to formulate and research
inquiry based questions.
Technique and Observations:
Students will be assessed during the teleconference
by teacher observations. The students should be
actively participating in the lesson and following the
directions of the presenter. Students comments
during the class discussion immediately following will
also be noted and utilized during the planning of future
conferences.
A variety
of assessment techniques will be used throughout the
three month unit.
