The Force is Right
Grade 5

What Keeps Structures Standing?
Exploring balance, tension, compression and flexion.  Using hands-on models, students will learn about the physics of buildings.

Objective/Focus
This lesson is the culmination of  a month long project on architecture in Albany, New York.  The students went on a walking field trip and were able to identify structural styles.  Using the science kits provided by the Louisville Center, the students applied prior lessons.

This integration plan was used by a Grade 5 Science Teacher at Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology.
Standard 1 - Analysis, Inquiry, and Design
Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.

Standard 2 - Information Systems
Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies.

Time Required:
Planning time included a one-day training with projectview and additional planning as required by kit contents.  The time with project view will assist the student with the process of video conferencing and conference etiquette.  Time will be set aside for kit content review approximately three hours to math the TOAST schoolwide curriculum.  Plus an additional 18 hours of skyscraper studies which will incorporate library research and hands-on activities with the science teacher.  One activity will be the walking tour of Albany where different designs will be discussed - the walking tour takes one hour.

For final assessment, the students will construct a straw skyscraper and tape and demonstrate the principles of balance, support and other principles demonstrated during the video conference.

Logistical Planning:
Students will develop questions to ask Derrick Wood during the conference.

Technique and Observations:
Observation and journaling different activities
