Post Test “Post Season”

Part 1:  No calculators please

Determine the batting average in each case:

2 hits in 8 at bats                  3 hits in 10 at bats                      1 hit in 3 at bats

2 for 5               3 for 9               3 for 8

Match the decimal batting average on the left with its corresponding H/AB ratio on the right.  No H/AB ratio is used more than once, and not all ratios are used.

.300                  2/7

.250                  2/5

.286                  ¼

.375                  3/10

.333                  2/9

                        1/3

                        1/6

                        3/8

Circle the five H/AB ratios that represent a batting average above .300:

4/9        ¼            2/6            2/7            3/11            7/20            5/18            28/100            4/12            62/200

The first column gives a player’s batting average for the season so far.  The second column shows the player’s performance in the next game.  Decide how that game changes the season BA.  Circle up or down.

Season So Far              Next Game               BA Goes Up or Down?

.250                              1 for 3                           Up             Down

.320                              2 for 7                           Up             Down

.317                              2 for 5                           Up            Down

.270                              1 for 4                           Up             Down

Fill in the total bases for each player:

Player               Singles             Doubles            Triples               Homeruns         Total Bases

Jones                8                      3                      1                      2

O’Neil               6                      4                      2                      1

Dugan               5                      2                      1                      4

Calculate the slugging percentage for each player:

Player               At Bats            Hits            Doubles            Triples            Homeruns            Slugging %

Perez                100                   26            5                      2            4

Rivera               100                   32            8                      3            6

Torres               200                   68            15                     4            25

What is the batting average for a player who hits safely in the given percentage of at bats?

35.6%               29.3%               20%                  33%                  Bonus (2 points) – 30.95%

Given a player’s batting average and the number of at bats, determine the number of hits:

BA = .250 in 120 at bats:            hits =

BA = .400 in 180 at bats:            hits=

A player is hitting .300 with 63 hits.  How may at bats does the player have?

Part II: You may use your calculator

Question Set A.  Examine these actual data for the first five years of Joe DiMaggio’s career:

Year     At Bats            Hits            Doubles            Triples            HR            Batting Ave.            Slugging %

1936     637            206            44            15            29

1937     621            215            35            15            46

1938     599            194            32            13            32

1939     462            176            32            6            30

1940     508            179            28            9            31

Now answer these questions (one point each):

In which of these years did Dimaggio have…

The most doubles?

The most hits?

The most homeruns?

The most at bats?

An equal number of doubles and homeruns?

What was Joltin’ Joe’s batting average each year?  Shor yur ansers in the chart above.

What was Joltin’ Jo’s sluggin percentage each year?  Show your answers in the chart above.

Bonus ( two points):  In which year did he have the most total bases?

Question Set B:  All questions are worth one point each.

Suppose Mark McGwire ended the season with 18 doubles, 1 triple, and 56 homeruns.

Without counting his singles, how many total bases does he have?

How many singles would it take for him to have 300 total bases?

If he actually had 85 singles, how many total bases would he have?

Suppose Babe Ruth had 182 in 454 at bats entering the last game of the season.

What is his current batting average?  (make sure you express your answer as a three place decimal)

If he bats once and fails to get a hit, will he bat .400 (or higher) for the season?

If he goes “0 for 2” will he bat .400?

Will he bat at least .400 for the season if he goes 1 for 3?

If he goes 1 for 4 will he end at .400 or above?

If he gets five at bats during the game, how many hits will he need to bat at least .400?

Bonus:  Suppose Bernie Williams has a batting average of .333 in 543 at bats for the season, while Derek Jeter also hits .333, but in 595 at bats.

Who wins the batting title? (one point)

Why? (two points – you must show your work)
