Tinker to Evers to Chance

Objectives:

-Students will analyze information and statistics about three Chicago Cubs players; Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance.

-Students will write a newspaper article depicting the legendary double play specialists and their induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

-Students will calculate batting percentages in order to provide statistical data for their article.

Background:

Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance, Chicago Cubs infielders in the early 1900’s, were part of the most infamous double-play combination in all of baseball. Their consistently solid defense and batting led the Chicago Cubs to four National League pennants (1906-8, 1910) and two World Series wins (1907-8). The National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted all three players simultaneously in 1946.  Using information and statistics provided about the three players students will write a sports article as if they were working for the Chicago Tribune in 1946.  The year the three of them were simultaneously inducted into the Hall of Fame.
