SESSION ONE - Introduction and Historical
Background:
One
to two days (Social Studies).
Students
will be given the document of the letter from Benjamin Bogardus to his brother from Westchester,
September 1776, as provided by the New York Historical
society. They should be given both the photocopy of the
original and the clear transcription. Students will discuss the
impact of the war on Bogardus and others
in the area as seen in the letter.
Students will be shown maps that detail the
area discussed in the letter. They will be told how important
this area was as a harbor and as the gateway to the
Hudson/Champlain Valley corridor.
Each
student is assigned one of five groups of people who lived during
the Revolution:
Professionals
Trades/Craftspeople
Military
Personnel
Agricultural
Children
Each group completes the “Describe how your group
lives” column of a graphic
organizer to prepare for the
videoconference.
Copies are made for each student who then uses
the organizers to write a list of questions they would like to ask
the experts at the videoconference about the daily life in
Revolutionary times. The resulting organizers are photocopied
students to use at the teleconference and are also sent to the
Historic Society.
Before the videoconference, students can
preview some objects they may be shown at the teleconference. (Go
