NYS Learning Standards - Grade 6-8

Social Studies – Standard 1:

Students will study about the major developments in New York State and United States history by learning about the roles and contributions of individuals and groups.

Students will be able to complete well-documented and historically accurate case studies about individuals and groups who represent different ethnic, national, and religious groups.

After reading about ordinary people in historic time period, students will be able to research major events and themes from New York State and United States history including the American Revolution, to develop conclusions about the roles played by individuals and groups.

ELA – Standard 1:

Students will be able to listen and read to acquire information and understanding by collecting data, facts, and ideas using knowledge from oral, written, and electronic sources

Students will be able to interpret and analyze information reference materials, audio and media presentations.

Students will use a wide variety of strategies for selecting, organizing, and categorizing information including graphic organizers.

Objectives:

Students will understand the impact of the American Revolution on everyday life in and around New York City.

Goal:

Students will become familiar with the geography of New York and its strategic importance to both armies.

Students will understand the impact of the Revolution in New York on the war.

Goal:

Students will understand the importance of working with primary documents to study history.

Students will develop and use their own graphic organizers as they read to understand information about individuals who lived during the American Revolution.

Goal:

Students will understand methods of characterization to develop a character and write a letter in that persona.

Goal:

Students know how to write friendly or business letters in the character of a Revolutionary era person, and will use the correct standard format.
