President Theodore Roosevelt to Visit Capital
Region
Local Teachers Set to Unveil
National Points of View Education Demonstration
Project
Schenectady,
NY – On Tuesday October 28th, as part
of a three day program of events, educators and
project partners for the Points of View Education
Demonstration Project will unveil an original and
nationally replicable standards-based social
studies curriculum centered on the life and
presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
The demonstration follows a year-long effort to
develop a unique and interactive learning model
utilizing state of the art broadband technologies
and cable programming resources. The project was
selected last October among many submitted across
the country to receive a $65,000 grant from Cable
in the Classroom.
Project partners Time Warner Cable, C-SPAN and
Project VIEW of the Schenectady City School
District have contributed resources in the form of
broadband capabilities, content and
video-conferencing expertise, respectively. Master
teachers representing Schenectady, Amsterdam,
Ballston Spa and Scotia/Glenville have taken part
in research trips to the White House
Historical Association, the Library of Congress
archives, and Sagamore Hill - the Long Island home
and summer White House of President Roosevelt, to
develop the project’s curriculum materials and to
explore how the life and presidency of Theodore
Roosevelt transcends across multiple teaching
disciplines including current affairs. The project
has been independently evaluated by the SUNY
Evaluation Consortium to show how new technologies
can have a positive impact on teaching
methodologies and student learning outcomes.
Tuesday’s demonstration, to be streamed live on
the web at
www.twalbany.com/pov,
will feature a multi-location simultaneous
interactive forum that will include students and
educators showcasing the project curriculum in
live classroom sessions while interacting with
nationally recognized Theodore Roosevelt
re-enactor, James Foote. On Monday, October 27th
through Wednesday, October 29th, the C-SPAN School
Bus will be at area schools to conduct interactive
instructional sessions with students and Theodore
Roosevelt. Students and teachers will re-live a
1904 Theodore Roosevelt Campaign Whistle Stop and
compare it to today’s Campaign 2004. A schedule
of times and locations is attached.
"We salute our teachers and our partners,” said
Dr. John Falco, Superintendent of the
Schenectady
City School District, "for pioneering quality
interactive video-conferencing for our students."
“We’re pleased that this project demonstrates
ways that Social Studies teachers can do their
vital job more easily. Points of View serves as a
model that can be replicated by educators around
the country,” said Peggy O’Brien, Ph.D., executive
director of Cable in the Classroom.”
“In unveiling this project we salute nine very
special educators whose dedication and vision
will play a significant role in expanding and
enhancing the classroom experience of our students
not just for now, but for many years to come,”
said Stephen Pagano, President of Time Warner
Cable’s Albany Division.
“It has been so exciting, to be involved from
beginning to end as the teachers have integrated
C-SPAN video into their classroom lessons. And we
are so pleased the results of their efforts will
be available for other educators and students to
use through C-SPAN’s website." said Meg Steele, C-SPAN’s Manager
of Education.

percent of K-12 students. CIC focuses on five
