About Crabs

Lesson No. 1

OBJECTIVES: 

  1. Students will use the Internet to learn about the Blue Crab.
  2. Students will be able to identify the difference between a male and female Blue Crab.
  3. Students will be able to identify the Blue Crab’s predators and prey
  4. Students will be able to describe the Blue Crab’s life cycle including its feeding habits.

BACKGROUND:

This lesson should be completed prior to the Blue Crab Lab.  This Web site
www.vims.edu/adv/ed/crab/contents.html  will give students an opportunity to learn more about the Blue Crab before actually seeing it.

DESCRIPTION:
This is Internet activity that will allow children to explore information regarding the Blue Crab.  The Web site contains many links to more information regarding Blue Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay. 

MATERIALS:

            Student worksheet

            Computer w/Internet

PROCEDURE: 

1.       Log on to the Web site 

            * Link to worksheet

2.       Explore the Site.  Allow students to become familiar.

3.       Introduce worksheet so that students have a purpose when searching.

4.       Discuss answers.

Blue Crab Lab (

ELA:  Have students write a fictional story as if they were a Blue Crab.  Challenge them to use as many vocabulary words in their stories as possible.  Ex: Claws, crustaceans, watermen, scavenger, molting, decapods, etc.

Math:  Draw a Blue Crab to scale based on the measurements given on the Web site.

SS:  Locate the Chesapeake Bay on a map and compare it to where your students live.
