INVENTORS PROJECT - EXTENSION ACTIVIES

TOPIC:
The Industrial Age: What the industrial age was like in the
Schenectady area, with a focus on how inventions changed our
way of life. The General Electric Company was a focal point
in the industrial revolution in the United States. They
“electrified” the world.
- Visit the
Schenectady Museum for local inventions inquiry and
demonstrations.
SOCIAL
STUDIES:
Tie the Schenectady Museum
videoconference into a unit on the Industrial Revolution.
- Use
inventors, inventions, and industrial development at the
local level.
- Explore
social aspects such as child labor, women in the labor
force, and how life changed as a result of invention and
industry.
SCIENCE:
Develop inventions and participate in the Invention Convention
at the Schenectady Museum.
- Research
the negative aspects of inventions, and the environmental
impact it had on society.
- Reproduce
a 3-D replica of a researched invention.
MATH:
Research the Schenectady GE Plot for statistical information.
- Create
representational bar graphs of dates homes were built and
purchased.
- Using
architectural examples of the homes, identify geometric
shapes in the structures.

LANGUAGE
ARTS:
Students will read a biography on a self chosen inventor, and
provide a book report with project. Lesson plan link
available.
GIFTED AND
TALENTED STUDENTS:
Include a visit to the Schenectady Museum for a tour of the
archives.
- This visit
could include finding materials for a GE Plot project in
math, architecture, o culture of the time.
