MasterMinds

Time Warner Cable presents "MasterMinds," an academic competition featuring representatives from area high schools. "MasterMinds" is a BOCES service. All public, private and parochial high schools are eligible. "MasterMinds" uses the College BowlTM format for match play. Matches are played in seven-minute halves with each school playing four students at a time. Students must ring in and be recognized before answering. Correct answers earn that player's team 10 points and the opportunity for the team to answer a bonus question. This format was used for the "GE College Bowl" television show. The questions cover a broad range: art, biology, chemistry, current events, geography, history, literature, music, political science, pop culture, religion and sports.

"Be Kind to Animals Week" Poster and Essay Contest

The Animal Protective Foundation will celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week, May 5-11, with its first poster and essay contest for kids in grades 1-6. Naturally, kindness to animals is very important to us. However, the ideals taught in our humane education programs extend beyond animals to include responsibility and respect for people and the world we live in.

This contest also has another important goal: teaching safety with animals, especially dangerous dogs. To that end, we have partnered with State Farm Insurance Agent Karen Burne in Niskayuna to provide safety materials for participating schools. If at least two classes in a school take part in either the poster or essay contest, a free copy of the "BARK Dog Bite Prevention Program" video and workbook will be provided for their school library.

Developed by the Humane Society of the United States, the BARK program (which stands for Be Aware, Responsible and Kind) has been proven successful in teaching kids how to respond safely to dangerous situations with dogs and cats. It’s a valuable and ready-to-use resource that could save a child from serious harm. Valued at $23.95, schools will receive these materials just for participating in the contest. They will be available in time for Dog Bite Prevention Week, May 19-25.

But that’s not the only benefit. Contest winners, their families and teachers will be invited to a special reception at the Animal Protective Foundation on May 12, where posters and essays will be on display. They will also each receive prizes and certificates. In addition, our media sponsor, Spotlight Newspapers, will feature stories on the contest.

Submissions must be postmarked by April 28, 2003. Winners will be announced on May 5.
For more for more information go to http://www.animalprotective.org/ or please call 374-3944, ext. 113.
