Contests, Opportunities and Educational Events

Points of View Project Promotes Analytic Thinking

This fall, Points of View, a Cable in the Classroom regional demonstration project, will bring together cable programming and resources, video-conferencing capabilities, and high-speed Internet service in an inquiry-based curriculum centered on the life and presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. This unique project will foster analytic thinking using direct broadband access to primary documents, streaming video, and live interaction with experts, creating a model of interactive teaching and learning that can be replicated in any K–12 classroom.

"The impact of a program like this on students is phenomenal," says John Falco, Superintendent of the Schenectady, N.Y. City School District, which is piloting the project. "Integrating a unique array of countless resources and the ability to interact with experts is what makes this program educationally rich and exciting. The result is learning that is deeper and more applicable to the real world." Outside evaluators from The University at Albany are looking at effectiveness and learning outcomes as evidenced by student work products, standardized test scores, and interviews with teachers. Ongoing progress reports and research results will be available on the Cable in the Classroom Web site at http://www.ciconline.org/POV/default.htm.

Dr. Falco has seen results of a project like Points of View firsthand. Over the past two years, students in his school district have participated in Project View video-conferencing events with the Albany Institute of History and Art and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. "The students’ reactions, inquiries, and responses clearly indicate their interest and engagement, as well as demonstrate that learning is taking place," says Falco. "The teachers and students continue to express enthusiasm and interest in the project. It’s quite refreshing." Points of View is a partnership of Cable in the Classroom, Project View, C-SPAN, and Time Warner Cable Albany. For more information, go to http://www.twalbany.com/education/pointsofview.php
