Happy New Year! The January issue of Time Warner Cable’s education newsletter, TWC’s Education Connection, is featuring unique Cable in the Classroom educational resources for teachers, parents and students.
 
The purpose of this newsletter is to update you on the current Cable in the Classroom resources that are available for you to videotape and download off the Internet for use in your classroom. Time Warner Cable National Teacher Awards: "The Crystal Apple"

Time Warner Cable recognizes 20 outstanding projects that provide creative learning experiences for students using cable programming or technology as an element in their development.
 
Winners receive $1,000, an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC., for the awards banquet, and Crystal Apple sculpture.
 
Submitted entries must have taken place between September 1, 2003 and April 16, 2004. K-12 educators who work at state accredited public or private schools in areas served by Time Warner Cable are eligible to enter.

Time Warner Cable is proud to sponsor Hyde School Programs for the second consecutive year, supporting arts education for students of all ages in twenty regional school districts. The Hyde Collection, a fine arts museum located in Glens Falls, offers guided tours throughout the school year FREE of charge. The expansive permanent collection and regularly changing special exhibitions provide the foundation for School Programs that link art and art history with social studies, language arts, math, and science.
 
The Museum’s education department collaborates with classroom teachers and curriculum coordinators to develop object-based programming that satisfies New York State learning standards and prepares students for features of their standardized achievement tests. Over twenty options are offered, each designed to meet the needs of the student and teacher—reflecting the curriculum in both grade level and subject matter. Tours can be customized to specific classroom needs.

Monday Music Kid’s Series, presented by Capital News 9 and TWC

Join David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony Orchestra as they continue to explore great moments in music history. As the recipient of the first ASCAP Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming, the series has set the standard in making classical music accessible to young people. With original scripts and performances tailored to elementary age children, Monday Music provides a morning of fun for children from all over the Capital Region. Monday Music performances are held at 10 am.

WMHT Reading Rainbow Contest
 
Elementary teachers take note again Reading Rainbow allows kids to be more than an audience. It allows them be authors and artists! For the 10th year in a row, Reading Rainbow, which airs weekdays at 12:30pm on WMHT, offers its Young Writers & Illustrators Contest for kids in grades K-3. WMHT partners with Reading Rainbow to send selected short stories and poems from aspiring Capital Area authors to the national contest. From there, the big prizewinners are chosen from each grade with their stories to be published on Reading Rainbow's Web site!
 
There's no limit to genre. Contestants can write and illustrate a story about a trip to grandma's, a day at school, or a magical adventure in a land far, far away. Poetry or prose, fact or fiction, the only limit is a child's imagination. Additional rules regarding word count and eligibility, as well as the much-needed entry form, can be found at www.pbskids.org/readingrainbow.

The program will offer students a performance experience encompassing a variety of art forms to develop an appreciation for each of them individually as well as an understanding of the nature of collaboration through dance.
