TWC Education Connection

The October issue of Time Warner Cable’s education newsletter is featuring unique Cable in the Classroom educational resources for teachers, students, and parents.

Election Education

Pundits and politicians are saying that this year's presidential election will be both critically important and close. Teachers will be taking advantage of interest in the election to teach about government, democracy, and civic responsibilities. One way to get kids interested in these topics is through simulations, and that's why CIC created eLECTIONS: Your Adventure in Politics, an online 3-D, high-speed game that allows kids and adults to experience a run for the presidency. Or check our Web site for a new page full of elections-related resources.

We are hoping you will forward this newsletter letter to a colleague who would find this information useful.  For more information on CIC or questions about this newsletter, contact eric.kantor@twcable.com.

JOHN KERRY: BORN TO RUN

CNN’s Candy Crowley puts nominee John Kerry under the microscope. His life story has played out in the public spotlight -- from Vietnam hero to anti-war protester, from ambitious young prosecutor to veteran of the U.S. Senate. Yet in some ways Kerry remains a mystery. What do we know about his core beliefs? Is he a man of conviction -- or rather, as his critics claim, an opportunist who shifts and shapes his views to fit the political moment?

THE MISSION OF GEORGE W. BUSH

He calls himself a “war president” – a man uniquely suited to lead the nation in the post-9/11 world. His supporters call him a man of conviction and self-confidence, a leader whose religious faith keeps him focused and resolute. Critics call him stubborn and closed-minded, with a black-and-white view of the world that is dangerously superficial. Who is President George W. Bush? What have we learned about his decision-making, his personal style, his religious faith during his first-term in office? John King looks for answers in this investigative profile.

IMMIGRANT NATION, DIVIDED COUNTRY

Or are they energizing the U.S. economy and keeping the American dream alive? Maria Hinojosa, a Mexican-American herself, goes inside the lives of four families on the front lines of the growing debate over illegal immigration.

THE FIGHT OVER FAITH

It is the fastest-growing form of Christianity in America. Some surveys say nearly 40% of Christians in this country describe themselves as “evangelical” or “born again.”  They are making their presence felt across the country. They flocked to see Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” making it one of the most profitable films ever released. And their conservative, strict interpretation of the Bible has set off fierce battles that threaten to tear apart mainline protestant congregations across the country. What does it mean to be an evangelical in America 2004 – and why is this brand of Christianity spreading so rapidly right now? Carol Marin investigates.
