During the summer of 2001, Project VIEW hosted the first of several summer institutes.  Between July 9th and August 30th, 261teachers from fifty-two schools within  New York State participated in the Video-Conference Integration Training program.  The program, focusing on the integration of videoconference programs into standards-based curriculum was instructed by Diane Wilkinson, Project VIEW's Instructional Technology Coordinator.

The summer training included a number of components including:

  • Interactive Videoconference Demonstrations
  • Strategies for an Effective Interactive Videoconference
  • Making the Content Connection
  • Showcasing of Content Provider Connections which included the Albany Institute of History and Art, the Ocean Institute, Buffalo Zoo, the Schenectady Museum, National Baseball Hall of Fame, COSI-Toledo and many more.
  • Preliminary Integration Planning
  • Classroom Integration Planning
  • Content Integration including strategies and tools. (Strategies to integrate content for standard-based instruction included activities that have methodologies of guided web-based projects, Venn diagrams, logic maps, multimedia presentations, graphing data, Internet Research, Assessment etc.)

The training also provided teachers access and connections to museums and museum personnel, resources and support products, numerous teams of teachers, collaborating classrooms and the Project VIEW team members.

Following the training, the teachers use the  videoconference programs and the integration plans they each developed, as an integral part of their curriculum.  Many schools and districts also received funding to receive ,install and support videoconference systems and programs.  Project VIEW continues to provide support for the program and equipment.

After the use of the videoconference program, teachers reflected upon the process of their own experiences as well as the experiences of their colleagues.  They've made suggestions for improvement and retooling as needed.
